Follow The Swallow through Wilde Island Town.

| Katarzyna Tomczak

Inspired by the Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale, ARTS OVER BORDERS has created the Flight of the Little Golden Swallow from Coles Monument down into the Island Town of Enniskillen commissioning 150 gold-leaf swallows designed by artist Simon Carman and Helen Sharp to mark 150th anniversary of Wilde’s last year in Enniskillen.

Follow the Swallow trail will be launched on Saturday 16th October (Wilde’s Birthday). Arts Over the Borders invites you to Follow the Swallow journey and immerse yourself in the life of Oscar Wilde with a Walk on the Wilde Side. You can Follow the Swallow from the War Memorial in Belmore Street at the foot of Forthill Park of The Happy Prince statue all the way through the town to Enniskillen Castle Museum. Throughout the day of Wilde’s birthday (16th October) Wilde Island Town (WIT) will come to life offering Wildean and Beckettian fare in the cafes, pubs, restaurants and hotels. For more information click here.

To mark the 100th anniversary of Beckett’s early ‘sporting’ years in Enniskillen, Arts Over Borders is gifting its 32 figurative bronzes (value £40,000) as a long-term loan to the island town of Enniskillen, effectively transforming the island town’s tight matrix of little shops, pubs and coffee houses, churches and castles into a splendid giant art gallery.

One of the most famous and most valuable historical chess sets is known as The Isle of Lewis Chess Set, as it was found on the outer Hebridean island of Lewis and is now displayed at the British Museum and National Museum of Scotland.  It is understood to have originated from Trondheim, Norway c.1200 and is carved in walrus ivory.

It can be viewed on Saturday 16th October where a game of chess will be played throughout Enniskillen. The Chess pieces will be on permanent display in various businesses in Enniskillen. Watch out for them when in town!
